How to compete with 400 applicants

How to compete with 400 applicants

when applying for a job online

I recently advertised a job opening online for an Office Assistant position paying $11.00 hour.  With the current economy in mind I was expecting a huge response.  I received over 400 resumes within 1 week.  There was only one job opening.  As the person responsible for reviewing all the resumes and choosing who to call for an interview the task seemed overwhelming.

With so many resumes to look at and choose from it seemed reasonable to skip past the resumes that just did not look good at first glance.  So if the resume was poorly formatted, had poor grammar and spelling mistakes I was inclined to just move on to the next one.  If the resume had an objective different from the position I was trying to fill I would not go beyond the objective to take a closer look at the resume.

So you really do need to have a really good resume.  It should be short and concise, easy to read.  It should be perfect in every way, the way it is layed out, perfect spelling, and grammar.  Make sure it fits with the position you are applying for … the objective should match, the skills and qualifications should match.

Don’t get discouraged.  Keep sending your resume out.  Just make sure it is a good resume and a good match for the position you are applying for.
